26th Sep 2011 | Leave a comment Career Change Myths #3: Following My Values Will Make Life Easier The modern consensus is that values are good, and if we follow our values we’ll be happier, and life will get higher, right? Mythbuster Here’s what no one tells you: Following your deepest values means confronting your darkest fears. Following your values entails proudly owning up to what you actually need in life, and what's due to this fact of secondary significance. Living your values means risking the potential for failing at something that you care about most. Because we care so much about our values, by definition we are scared by them; they characterize our highest hopes, and our darkest fears. The trick is, to understand that these are two sides of the identical coin. If we wish the worth, we should be keen to have the worry. The real question is that this. If following your values was about carrying your deepest fears and anxieties with you, would you still be willing to observe them? Career Change Your e-mail address is not going to be printed. Go to the doctor in the morning and other proven timing hacks

Go to the specialist toward the beginning of the day and other demonstrated planning hacks Go to the specialist toward the beginning of the day and other demonstrated planning hacks One of the world's premier scholars on business and social science, Daniel Pink is the writer of a few top rated books on business, work, and conduct. He as of late plunked down with world-driving business thinker Whitney Johnson, creator of Build an A-Team and host of the Disrupt Yourself Podcast, to talk about why when matters as much as what, how, where, and why. This discussion has been altered and consolidated. To tune in to Daniel and Whitney's full discussion on the Disrupt Yourself Podcast, click here.Whitney: [Your] new book, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, is a flat out joy to peruse. What's the enormous idea?Daniel: The huge thought is that we think the planning is a craftsmanship. We settle on our planning choices dependent on instinct and mystery, however it's in reality a significant science. There is this gigantic assemblage of examination out there across many, numerous fields that permits us to make methodicallly more intelligent, progressively prove b ased choices about when to get things done. Thus, in this book, I attempt to crack the code of good timing.Whitney: In any given day, we have pinnacles and troughs. For most individuals, the pinnacles come toward the beginning of the day, troughs in the evenings. What are a portion of the ramifications of this?Daniel: We by and large travel during that time in three phases; a pinnacle, a trough, [and] a recuperation. For the greater part of us, the pinnacle is toward the beginning of the day, the trough is in the early evening, and the recuperation is in the late evening or early night. For individuals who are solid evening people, it's the opposite request, however the suggestions are huge. Time of day clarifies about 20% of the difference in our exhibition on psychological errands on things that require our mind. Thus, this inquiry of when is material to our exhibition and to our temperament. It has gigantic implications.Let's take wellbeing. In light of this exploration, I would not release a friend or family member to the emergency clinic toward the evening if that was avoidable. Sedation mistakes are multiple times almost certain at 3:00 p.m. than at 9:00 a.m., for instance. Seeing colonoscopies, specialists discover half the same number of polyps in evening tests than in morning tests, regardless of whether it's a similar populace. There is some extraordinary exploration indicating that specialists, medical attendants, orderlies, clinic staff [are] significantly less liable to wash their hands during the evening than toward the beginning of the day. In this way, when we consider our encounters, as clients, as patients, as individuals doing tasks, we center [on the] what, how, and who of our days, however the when of what we're doing has a gigantic effect. The other enormous thought [here] is that we don't take these when questions genuinely enough, and they materially affect our disposition, on our prosperity, on our presentation, on what we realize, on s ocial insurance conveyance, on an entire scope of things.Whitney: In the book, you talk about the bigger circular segment of our carries on with the beginnings, the mid focuses, and the finishes. You quote Cervantes and state, To be fortunate toward the start is everything. What do you mean by that? What's more, explicitly, what have been a portion of your great beginnings?Daniel: What the examination shows is that beginnings matter more than we understand and have a more prominent effect as time goes on than we understand. You see this in an entire scope of collaborations. In the event that you see something like school start times for young people the American Academy of Pediatricians says, Don't begin school for youngsters before 8:30 toward the beginning of the day, but then the normal school start time is 8:03 a.m. in the United States. Just, the hour of day of the school begins is expanding the dropout rate, expanding young despondency, expanding corpulence, and prompting incr easingly adolescent accidents.I discovered this truly disturbing. There is some exploration from Lisa Conn at Yale indicating the accompanying: you take two individuals who move on from a similar school, [have] a similar major, [and have] comparable capacity five years separated. One alumni in a downturn, one alumni during a blast time. The individual graduating in a blast time, will procure somewhat more cash straight out of the door. Is astounding that the compensation contrast appears 20 years after the fact. It's unbelievable.Whitney: How do you right for that?Daniel: I set out three standards of beginnings: start right, start once more, start together. However much as could reasonably be expected, it's essential to begin right. This is the reason you have more organizations focusing on what occurs in the principal week, in the main year of someone's residency at work. Chip Heath and Dan Heath expound a great deal on taking these minutes and making that starting important and va luable to individuals with the goal that they get off on a decent trajectory. At an individual level, there are times when here and there we have to begin once more. There's some examination from the University of Pennsylvania about what's known as the new beginning impact, which shows that we're bound to make conduct changes on specific dates of the year instead of different dates of the year. You're bound to roll out an improvement on a Monday, as opposed to on a Wednesday. On the day after a Federal Holiday, instead of the day preceding a Federal Holiday. There are sure dates in the year that work as worldly tourist spots, and we can utilize them to make a new start. On an arrangement level, we should take the issue of the individuals moving on from school, through no deficiency of their own, at an inconvenient time. Possibly we have to treat downturns likened to how we treat cataclysmic events. There's a seismic tremor, you will get some assistance in light of the fact that throug h no shortcoming of your own, the ground ejected underneath you and obliterated your property. We're going to get you out. Your neighbors are going to support you, the open specialists are going to support you. Possibly we have to accomplish something like, if the joblessness rate hits a specific level for that year or for that specific timeframe, individuals' understudy credits are pardoned, or they're reduced.Whitney: Before we proceed onward from beginnings, do you have a solitary tip that you would provide for individuals to either get looking great so far or really, more critically, beginning again?Daniel: Pick the correct date. Not all dates are made equivalent. On the off chance that you have dates that are actually important, that can be incredible. In this way, in the event that you need to begin a conduct change or something to that affect, suppose… Whitney: For me, [it's to] quit eating sugar.Daniel: I would start the new system on a day that has some extraordinary impo rtance to you. Possibly the day after your birthday or the day after your commemoration, the day after one of your child's birthday events or something like that.Whitney: Let's go to midpoints. What do we have to think about these? Specifically, would you be able to [talk] about the Oh goodness effect?Daniel: Sometimes midpoints cut us down, some of the time they fire us up. There's some extraordinary examination from Connie Gersick at UCLA and Yale where she chased after these groups and recorded what these groups did. These are groups who are thinking of another publicizing effort or revealing another item for a bank or you know, only the fundamental stuff that goes on in the work environment. She discovered something extremely impossible to miss. We have this idea that there's this genuinely consistent direct procedure by which groups accomplish their work. What she discovered is that it didn't work that path by any means. Groups start by doing, close to nothing, [mostly] acting and status-chasing. Be that as it may, there was a second when they began truly working vigorously, [which] came at the midpoint. So, you give a group 34 days to accomplish something and they begin decisively on day 17. You give a group 11 days to accomplish something, they begin vigorously on day 6. That midpoint had this exciting impact it had this Oh goodness impact. Individuals take a gander at the schedule and they state, Hold up! We burned through portion within recent memory. We better get moving! It's simply ghostly how frequently it occurred. She made tests where she would allow groups an hour to accomplish something. Also, they would truly begin vigorously between the 29th and 31st moment. That is something extremely helpful for supervisors and undertaking pioneers to realize how extends truly unfurl. They can make these midpoints remarkable, and use it to get individuals to move.Whitney: Now, you talk in midpoints about a U-bend of bliss, a midlife droop, an American male droop at an expected 52.9 years. According to my observations, you are directly about at 52.9 years.Daniel: Indeed.Whitney: How have you seen that for you? What has that midlife droop resembled for you? What's more, excitingly, on the off chance that publishing When is your droop, at that point what do we have ahead?Daniel: You know, I really have felt that droop on two or three distinct measurements. I've been doing what I've been doing now for a long time, and throughout composing this book, I resembled, Hello, this is my last book. I can't do this any longer. I can't tolerate it any longer. This is extremely hard. If you were to graph my general prosperity, it wouldn't amaze me at all in case I'm lower than at different focuses in my life. It is anything but a major plunge for me however the U is reasonably flat.Whitney: But it's a droop nonethelessDaniel: I think it is. I wish I would've tried that. That diagnostic piece of me wishes I would've tried that, essentially taken a te mperament perusing twice consistently for as long as I can remember and see where I was today.People my age regularly have guardians who are getting more established, and messes with you have to help with advancing into the world. Doubtlessly that there are sure frustrations that you have when you get to my age. The chances of my being on a 40 Under 40 rundown are essentially nil. My chances of winning a Pulitzer Prize are nearly nil. I think we need to deal with those sorts of things. The uplifting news however, Whitney, as you state, is that things start to tick up a little bit.Whitney: Do you have a couple of recommendations for individuals to viably battle that mid

Sharpen Your Presentation Skills as a Consultant

Hone Your Presentation Skills as a Consultant Hone Your Presentation Skills as a Consultant To pitch a possible customer or give an advancement report on a venture, each fruitful advisor needs great introduction abilities. On the off chance that youre ever apprehensive when youre enlightening a gathering of individuals concerning your work, so is nearly every other person. Here are a few rules for facilitating your common uneasiness and conveying your message adequately when confronting any crowd. What to Present Regardless of whether youre conversing with one individual or mutiple, youre simply conveying, says interchanges expert Bill Smartt, leader of SmarttTalk in New York City. Start by making sense of the message you need somebody to remove. That may be the particular issue youre going to illuminate. At that point present three different focuses that help your primary topic. Basically conveying a lot of realities is exhausting, says Smartt. Rather, recount to a story. Have a discussion with your crowd. Converse with them, rather than gazing into space. Use stories that show your own point of view on what youre examining, and tie into your theme. That is the thing that individuals recollect. To pitch new business, ask yourself whats generally imperative to this customer. Experts generally know all the particulars, yet the customer doesnt need to know everything about. A business thinks about how much your work will cost, regardless of whether it will take care of the issue, and be finished on schedule, Smartt prompts. Let that drive your introduction! Attempt to foresee likely inquiries. Welcome associates to propose prospects, and practice answers to every one of them. You might be astonished every so often, yet youll typically be prepared with all around educated, sure answers. For your last introduction after a venture, consider what your customer really thinks about. Its that you worked admirably, yet that you did it proficiently, Smartt notes. Despite the fact that counseling connections dont consistently go easily, accentuate the positive. For example, you could state, We had a few difficulties and weve took in a ton by settling them. Instructions to Prepare The mystery of a decent introduction is imperceptible. Its practice. Individuals commit 90% of their planning time to content. However examines show that lone 10% of crowd reaction depends on an introductions content. Theyre progressively influenced by your outward appearances, signals, stance and developments, just as by the tone, pitch and volume of your voice, clarifies Smartt. Spend at any rate 40% of planning time on your feet, practicing so anyone can hear. Youll feel crazy, yet its pivotal. At whatever point somebody talks before a gathering and it looks easy, that implies they contributed loads of time rehearsing, Smartt says. Steve Jobs would go through months taking a shot at an introduction, again and again, until it looked easygoing and characteristic. You become progressively certain when you experience your discussion ordinarily. Discover a practice space bigger than your work area or office. On the off chance that conceivable, utilize the room where youll really make your introduction, to get comfortable with its highlights and setting. The more you can practice all the real conditions, the better. Gather together a few companions or associates to be your crowd for a couple of moments, yet ask them not to make recommendations. Indeed, even with the best expectations, you can get horrendous input in a wide range of ways that may not be useful, Smartt alerts. Since so much happens inside when you face a gathering, its essential to get mindful of your physiological reactions. How are you relaxing? Where do you feel pressure? It is safe to say that you are looking at a few people in your crowd? Tape yourself. You cannot tell to what extent your introduction is until you tape it. Keep it brief, Smartt stresses. Focus on 15 minutes. Focus on whether youre sufficiently boisterous, or talking in a monotone. Do you use filler words? Do you shelter one side, or pace? Would you be able to get a remote switch to test your Power Point, in the event that you intend to utilize one? At that point you can abstain from hanging over your PC to propel your slides, Smartt recommends. On the off chance that relational correspondence isnt your quality, Smartt watches, You despite everything need to create it to manufacture your vocation. Attempt to talk at gatherings to get the word out about what you do. Join Toastmasters, a brilliant method to improve your introduction aptitudes. You cannot beat a week by week or fortnightly registration with others watching you, says Smartt. Take an Improvisation class. Youre before a gathering, and you need to think and react quickly. That is incredible practice for shaping words and sentences, particularly if your regular reactions are increasingly expository. For any introduction, center around the two basic elements. Practice. Recollect that youre talking with your crowd, not conveying a monolog. Dont be simply one more awful speaker, desires Smartt. On the off chance that you practice and plan ahead, youll stand apart just like a decent moderator. Tune Milano is an autonomous essayist. Try not to be simply one more terrible speaker. On the off chance that you practice and plan ahead, you'll stand apart similar to a decent presenter.Bill Smartt, president, SmarttTalk

The Tech Interview - Copeland Coaching

The Tech Interview You know, I love tech companies. With a computer engineering undergrad, I’ve spent my entire career working in the world of technology in one way or another. I’ve recently met a number of job seekers who have had job interviews at tech companies. They’re the kind of companies with only a few hundred employees. They have ping pong tables, video games, and free lunch. Quickly, I noticed that something was different about their interview experience. Before the interview, we worked to update their resume and elevator pitch. But, nothing could have really prepared us for what happened next. The attitude inside the doors of the tech companies was different â€" very different. Lots of young, flip-flop wearing employees fill giant tables where they are setup with computer monitors. There are no offices or cubicles. Imagine working in a Starbucks, or a lunchroom. Employees look exhausted. Their eyes are red and they’re yawning while interviewing candidates. Despite the office perks, these folks are working their hearts out day and night. And, the stress of the environment seems to come through in the interview. Many of the interviews are what’s sometimes called a stress interview. They’re interviews designed to upset the job seeker, and to get a reaction out of them. In the middle of the interview, the hiring manager might tell the candidate that they’re not qualified for the role and that their experience is useless to the company. They do this all in a relatively rude and challenging way. Then, the hiring manager asks the candidate to respond. I’m really not sure how a candidate is expected to respond in these situations, especially if they have any self-respect. There’s also an obsession around money. At a tech startup, everybody wants to know how much money you want to make. If you’re coming from any sort of non-startup environment, it can be tough to pin down your salary requirements because the benefits are different. Startups often provide equity in place of high salaries. Tech companies are also looking for someone like them. Even when a candidate has all the required experience, it is very common for the number one objection to be, “You’ve never worked in tech.” A number of tech companies also have an internal voting structure. Rather than the hiring manager selecting you, the entire team is involved. The team will meet together after you interview to decide whether or not you’re a fit. At some organizations, even one vote against you can keep you from being hired. Right or wrong, this seems to be the reality that tech companies are living in. If you decide to interview at one, be sure to prepare yourself. On top of your normal interview preparation, learn as much as you can about the company, their culture, and their interview process. To score big at a tech company, you need to be more than qualified. You need to fit in. I hope these tips have helped you. Visit CopelandCoaching.com to find more tips to improve your job search. Maintaining Your Confidence During a Prolonged Job Search -

Maintaining Your Confidence During a Prolonged Job Search - A year or two ago, pretty much everyone knew someone who had been laid off.   That thought was scary enough, but now, most people know someone who has been out of full-time work for a year or more.  If you’re one of the people who’s been displaced from the job market for a long while now, you know the emotional toll that prolonged unemployment brings. Many of us identify ourselves through our jobs and our careers.   We make certain assumptions about new people based on whether they’re a doctor or a secretary.   However, not being able to identify yourself as any particular kind of employee presents a whole new challenge to your personal identity at a time when you can little afford to lose confidence in yourself.   How can you keep your spirits up during a prolonged job search? Networking Networking with other job seekers allows you to realize that there are many bright, competent people in the very same position in which you find yourself.   Although these people may also have been searching for work for a long time, you may be able to exchange tips that you’ve discovered along the way.   Networking with professionals who are employed can also offer a confidence boost.   Getting out in the community and talking with other people in your field will help you feel like your old self again. If you’re fortunate, you can also gather information that can help you in your job search. Volunteering When no one is paying you a salary in exchange for your skills, it’s easy to start thinking those skills aren’t valuable.   Volunteering your talents for causes that matter to you can stop this negative thinking in its tracks.   In addition to being able to see that your efforts are making a difference, volunteer work often reminds us that there are many in the world who are less fortunate, helping us to be grateful for what we have.   As an added bonus, volunteer work strengthens your resume during a period of unemployment or underemployment.   If you organize 50 college alumni in your area to contribute to a $5,000 scholarship for a current student, you will not only change that student’s life, but you will gain an easily quantifiable achievement to add to your resume. Socializing Networking and volunteering both involve spending time with other people, but often those people are professional contacts rather than close friends or family.   Throughout your job search, it’s important to keep yourself surrounded by the people who know you bestâ€"for more than just your job title.   Your loved ones know about the time you won your 3rd-grade spelling bee or pulled together a flawless football tailgate with two hours’ notice.   Reminders of your little victories in life provide a ray of sunshine when you’re faced with a stack of rejection letters. Surround yourself with people who keep your spirits upâ€"stay confident out there! Visit our blog for more job search advice, resumes, volunteering and online networking. Beyond the Buzzwords How Do You Show Soft Skills on Your Resume

Past the Buzzwords How Do You Show Soft Skills on Your Resume A week ago I was perusing LinkedIn's ongoing 2017 Global Trends Survey and was charmed to see that 35% of scouts expressed delicate abilities evaluation as one of the main elements influencing future selecting patterns. With an increasingly serious activity showcase, employers are stating that culture fit and delicate aptitudes are turning out to be major game changers in the screening and employing process. In view of this, the test at that point turns out to be how would you appear and prove culture fit and delicate abilities on a resume? How would you go past the trendy expressions to really demonstrate you have the delicate aptitudes the organization wants? LET'S LOOK AT THE CHALLENGES Not Easily Proven: First, how about we address the way that embeddings a delicate ability on a resume doesn't mean the individual really has a quality here. Individuals can say they're proactive, issue solvers, cooperative people, and have incredible relational abilitiesâ€"yet it doesn't take long to make sense of that not every person really has those delicate aptitudes. Doesn't Play Well With ATS: Second, managers aren't bouncing on their PCs and looking for applicants with the expressions conscientious, cutoff time driven, or steps up to the plate. What the Employer Wants? Suppose you need to incorporate a couple of delicate abilities scattered all through your resume. How would you know which ones are the most significant and which the business would esteem? THE SOLUTION TO PROOF The weight of verification: How would you take care of the issue of demonstrating you have the delicate aptitudes you guarantee? I encourage my customers to fuse the related catchphrase inside the setting of an achievement that shows that delicate aptitude. A model: Recuperated $1,000,000 lost income through tender loving care and fastidious survey of 750 customer accounts. Notice how it incorporates tender loving care and fastidious? These are delicate abilities, yet having them as a quality empowered this individual to locate a basic blunder coming about is recuperating more than $1 million in recently lost income. Without her tender loving care she would have disregarded the concealed mistake. You can do likewise with any delicate expertise that you haveâ€"just addition the delicate ability inside the setting of the achievement. THE SOLUTION TO ATS The facts confirm that businesses aren't scanning for up-and-comers by utilizing delicate abilities as search terms. They're utilizing industry-explicit watchwords and investigating achievements. Two incredible choices to even now guarantee your delicate aptitudes are seen by businesses who are evaluating them are to remember them for your introductory letter and inside your LinkedIn profile. On your introductory letter: Link the delicate aptitudes to culture fit. There's an unequivocal association between delicate aptitudes and culture fit. What does the way of life resemble at the organization? What do they esteem? Discover the association between your qualities and those qualities, and afterward call attention to that association inside your introductory letter. Delicate aptitudes in your LinkedIn Profile: One of the superb characteristics of your LinkedIn profile is that it gives an extra road to bosses to become familiar with you. That is actually what they'll do as well. When they've chosen they need to become familiar with you, the primary spot they will go is to your LinkedIn profile. It offers more adaptability than the unbending focusing on and center that a resume requires to get past the screening procedure. Utilize the chance to consolidate a couple of delicate expertise qualities inside your profile. Be particular and pick those that genuinely speak to a quality you have that you can approve, and share instances of results that those delicate abilities added to. Reward TIP: Ask a couple of partners to offer a proposal concentrated explicitly on a couple of delicate abilities that you need to cause to notice. This is an incredible method to offer approval and Evidence that you have those particular delicate abilities. Discovering WHAT THE EMPLOYER REALLY WANTS Along these lines, if delicate aptitudes are turning into a significant factor in the recruiting choice to such an extent that businesses are looking for instruments to survey them in competitors, and on the off chance that its driving future selecting patterns, at that point you have to make sense of what they need to see. My recommendation? Do your examination! WHERE DO YOU GO? The position declaration: The first and most evident spot to go is the activity advertisement. Managers incorporate culture esteems and wanted delicate abilities in the position declaration. This is your first stop. Other occupation promotions: Find different positions the organization has posted and audit what the organization needs to state about what they offer workers. You can ordinarily discover incredible understanding into culture fit, qualities, convictions, and wanted delicate abilities here. Utilize online life: Check out the organization's Facebook and LinkedIn profile to additionally look into the organization's way of life and qualities. The more data you locate, the better thought you'll have about the delicate abilities they esteem in their workers. Organization site: Companies incorporate data about their crucial, values, organization culture, all on their site. Research here to discover more data to assist you with picking the privilege delicate abilities. Organization surveys: I prescribe visiting Glassdoor.com to discover representative audits of organizations you need to target. The bit of leeway here is twofold. You could discover an abundance of data about the delicate abilities the business needs, in addition to the way of life and the board style of the organization. Incredible data to assist you with picking the privilege delicate abilities that line up with your qualities. The other favorable position is that dependent on these surveys you will have a superior thought of whether you need to focus on that organization or not. So we've tended to the three difficulties with delicate aptitudes on a resume and in a pursuit of employment and how to best handle them. In the event that you'd prefer to see instances of delicate aptitudes in real life here are a few 2017 official resume tests you can survey for motivation. Feedback on Get Your Next Promotion Pluralsight Course from Heather MacDonald

Feedback on Get Your Next Promotion Pluralsight Course from Heather MacDonald One of the most rewarding parts of creating stuff (in this case, soft skills courses for Pluralsight) is hearing what others think about it. Well, not hearing anything I dont need to hear that Im a dolt. But I do love to hear how anything Ive created has helped you think differently, or inspired you to do something (anything!). Mark LeBlanc said one of his objectives as a speaker is to impact and inspire. As soon as he said that it became my objective, as a creator. I was delighted to get tagged in this LinkedIn post by Heather MacDonald, who is working every day to make the world and her work environment a better place (link here). Just looking at Heathers LinkedIn profile shows me that she strives to help and build others it is inspiring! Heres what she wrote, in case you cant access  her post: Another Pluralsight course I finished recently was How to Get Your Next Promotion by Jason Alba, Product Manager. I am fully aware I’ve only been in my current role for a short time but I am always thinking about what I can do to better support my future plans for my life. I loved and recommend this course because: 1. It gives tangible steps to figure out what your plan is and how to follow up and get there 2. I love that it talks about soft skills and that it touched on the “cultural fit” issue in applying for new jobs 3. The course talks through how you can take control of your career path so you can truly own your own growth (I have fallen into the trap of believing that if I do a good job people will notice and promote me but I know that’s not typically true.) There are so many great pieces to this course depending on where you are in your career and what you want to do. I recommend watching the course and understanding where you’re going and what’s next that you can work on. Where are you on your career path? What’s next for you? What do you need to work on to be ready to move into your next role? Share what you have going on! You never know who else can help you achieve your dream. #career #lifelonglearning #goals Thank you Heather, for this very kind review! If anyone you want a 30 day pass to Pluralsight, to check out this and any of my other soft skills courses, or any of the around-7,000 courses from amazing people from around the world, just let me know. Ill see if I can find some. Why You Should Consider a Career in IT

Why You Should Consider a Career in IT The IT (Information Technology) field is one of the hottest career fields in the world right now. With the majority of our world now relying on computers, the demand for workers who understand and can manufacture, use, and repair computers continues to grow. There are countless reasons why you should consider a career in IT, but the top ones are outlined here. IT Professionals Are in High Demand With more and more of our lives and businesses involving computers, IT is a hot field right now. In fact, it’s consistently listed in the top 10 best career fields globally, with expected grown still expected over the next several years. Nearly every business relies on at least one computer, and for those businesses that rely on multiple computers, the internet, and software, they often have a dedicated IT person on staff. You Can Work Anywhere As an IT professional, you can literally work just about anywhere in the world. As with the previous section, computers are an integral part of the global economy, and computers are computers, no matter where they’re located in the world. Whether your business is in the United States or China, you’re using the same computers, so once you’ve done your education on computers, you can apply that to virtually any computer system, anywhere in the world. Opportunities for Advancement There’s really no limit as to how far you can advance in the IT field. Many in the IT field start off as systems analysts, and then are promoted to managers. Larger companies have larger IT departments, so there will be more room for advancement with those. If you don’t want to work for someone else, once you have enough experience in information technology, you can branch out with your own business. IT consulting can be a very lucrative business if you have the right knowledge and have the right connections to people. Variety of Roles The IT field encompasses a lot of territory and job titles. From computer operators all the way up to business owners or the acquisition of and management of large networks of computers, there are a practically infinite number of roles you can take on. If you enjoy the technical aspect, you might be interested only in the jobs of computer repairs or setting up a computer network or server, for example. If you’re more of a people person, you might gravitate toward the management positions that oversee IT personnel or acquisition of computer systems. It Pays Well The IT field pays well, no matter in which part of it you’re interested. Entry-level information technology analysts, with 4-year degrees, earn an average of about $60,000 USD per year. Experienced analysts earn an average of over $80,000 USD per year. If you have more specialized education, you can earn even more. Systems engineers earn an average of nearly $90,000 USD per year, and computer software architects average about $119,000 USD each year. Those are great salaries for fields that only require a 4-year degree. The IT Field is Constantly Changing You will never be bored as an IT professional. Information technology is constantly evolving, with new technologies being introduced every day. Just look at how quickly personal computers have advanced from being large, slow, cumbersome machines, to being sleek, fast, small laptops. We now have cell phones that are palm-sized and can run computer applications. The technology continues to advance quickly, and IT professionals are expected to keep up with it. You will be continually learning, which is always a good thing, no matter what your career field. Tech Companies Offer Great Working Environments Tech companies are some of the most innovative when it comes to both the work they do, and the working environments they provide. Since many of these tech companies are headed by relatively young business people, they often have some unconventional perks for employees. For example, some tech companies offer fitness classes or massages during the day. Others offer flex time, which allows their employees to set their own schedules. Break rooms may include full kitchens, rather than just a microwave oven and refrigerator. Granted, not all tech companies are going to offer these kinds of perks, but this field is more likely than other industry fields to understand what their employees want, and that happy employees perform better at their jobs. Final words To recap, the field of information technology is currently one of the fastest-growing career fields. Since the global economy is now reliant on computers and networks, this field will continue to expand. Information technology is one of the few career fields that you can start off in an entry-level position, earning a very nice salary. This career field offers a variety of different roles, so there’s something for nearly everyone from the computer repair technician to a manager to a Chief Technology Officer. This is a field that is constantly evolving and introducing new technologies, so you will not be stagnant, doing the same old thing every day. If you have an interest in computers, the IT field is definitely one you should consider.
